Plant Watering Calculator

Get quick watering estimates for your houseplants!

This tool provides general estimates only. Always check your plant's soil moisture before watering by feeling the top 1-2 inches of soil. Actual needs vary greatly based on your home's temperature, humidity, airflow, the season (plants need less water in winter), and the plant's specific condition. Thoroughly water pots with drainage holes until water runs out the bottom, then discard excess water.

Principles Behind the Calculator

Pot Material Matters: Terracotta/clay pots are porous and 'breathe,' allowing soil to dry out faster than non-porous plastic or glazed ceramic pots.

Soil Type & Drainage: Different soils hold water differently. Cactus/succulent mixes drain very quickly, while standard potting mixes hold moderate moisture. Good drainage prevents waterlogging.

Light = Plant Food & Water Use: Plants use light for photosynthesis (making food). More light generally means more activity and higher water usage, just like people need more fuel when they're active.

Drainage Holes are Key: Drainage holes prevent water from pooling at the bottom, which is the main cause of root rot (plant roots need oxygen too!).

Check First! The #1 tip: Always feel the soil 1-2 inches down before watering. It's the most reliable way to know if your plant is actually thirsty.

Water Thoroughly (with drainage): Watering until it runs out the bottom ensures the entire root ball gets hydrated and helps flush out mineral buildup.

Winter Rest: Most houseplants slow down in winter (less light/dormancy) and need significantly less water than during active growth seasons (spring/summer).
